Meaning: `column, pillar', also metaph. (Od.); as medic. terminus `cartiledge, wart' (Hp.).

Compounds: As 1. member in kionÒ-kra¯non `capital of a column' (Str. 4, 4, 6 [v. l.], D. S.) beside earlier and more usual kiÒ-kra¯non (Pl. Com., X., Delos IIIa etc.; syll. dissimilation). Further ¢kro-, tetra-, meta-, pro-kiÒn-ion (Ph.).

Derivatives: Diminut. kiÒnion (Ph. Bel.), -…skoj (Hero, J.), -…j `uvula' (medic.).

Origin (see intro): PGX, LW Anat.

Etymology: With Arm. siwn `column' identical, further isolated. One of the Graeco-Armenian agreements (Schwyzer 57). Specht KZ 66, 13 (also Lexis 3, 70) assumes a common Gr.-Arm. LW; cf. on a‡x and Porzig Gliederung 157; cf. also gšfura. Can the word be Pre-Greek?
